What Fall Traditions Do You Have?

As Luke gets older, it’s getting more important to me to start certain traditions with him.  I have great memories from growing up of certain traditions with did every year, and I think it’s wonderful to give your kids solid family times of bonding and fun that they can look forward to year after year.

So I’m curious – what fall traditions do you have?  I always make my pumpkin-chocolate chip bread sometime in September, and I decided that this year was a good year to start making it on the first day of fall.  We’re living with my parents right now until our house sells (please pray!), so last night we also had chili (my mom’s recipe is out of this world) with great crusty bread.

So….chili and pumpkin bread the first night of fall.  I like that. :)

I’m going to be taking Luke to the pumpkin patch within the next few weeks to get some fun autumn pictures.  He was only 3 months old last year, and not super strong with his head, so we didn’t get any, even though I really wanted to go.  I think I like the idea of going to the pumpkin patch the first Saturday in October.

Last year Lindsay and I made autumn jam over Columbus Day weekend, and since she is going to be here this year for C-Day, I think we’re going to do it again! (sweeeeet).  It’s a delicious blend of sugar, pumpkin, and spices that tastes fab-u-lous on biscuits.  Mmmmmm.  Oh and last year I also had a Fall Party at my house where everyone had to bring something fall-flavored or fall-colored.  I ate so much I almost felt sick.  But it was awesome.  I was looking forward to doing it again but clearly that’s not gonna happen since we moved 2 states away!

Anyway, I’m curious: what else do YOU do as a family?  We don’t celebrate Halloween, so I’m looking for ideas other than that.  Would you mind sharing?  I’d love to hear!  Kids or no kids, I’d love to hear what you do so I can steal all your ideas learn from your creativity. :)

Happy weekend!!!  :)

  1. We always go apple picking when the season rolls around - and then eat apples for weeks.

Pumpkin carving/painting is always a favorite too - if you didn't want to do that for Halloween, you could always make them for Thanksgiving.

And, crockpot meals for Sunday football!

  3. Apple picking is a definite!
All of the other traditions seem to do have to do with food...apple sauce, apple bread, apple cider donuts (I'm seeing a theme).
But the things I really enjoy are the little things...walking around the neighborhood, hearing the leaves crunch, heading towards the mountains for the first hint of snow.
Ahh...I love this time of year!

  5. Visiting from NFF. I love the fall... apple picking, decorating with a hay bale, scarecrow and mums. Driving out east and visiting the farm stands. I am in the Northeast too, so look forward to wearing jeans and sweaters.

  6. I remember roasting pumpkin seeds with my mom every year. It's something I didn't think about being a tradition, but it was certainly something we looked forward to.

  7. Traditions? You know whats interesting about traditions is that the things that I plan on being traditions didn't become ones and the things I never planned to be traditions did. :)

Here's one. When my oldest was 2 I decided to decorate the house the night before her birthday. She woke up to a surprise. Now, that has become a tradition. Everyone goes to bed the night before their birthday anticipating (and asking) for the "surprise" decorations. With seven children, it's alot of crepe paper (And I have friends who joke that I should just keep the decorations up), but it is so worth it.

Other ones? Letting our kids pick out whatever cereal they want before we go to the lake in the summer. (note--it's a great deal of sugar cereal) Drawing names for sibling gifts for Christmas.

I start pondering more ---and I'll let you know.

It's such a good thing to think about these things. Really.

    Blessings to you.

  8. Lots & lots of pumpkin bread, homemade applesauce in the crockpot, and apple butter....but no specifics. I like that idea too! I'd love the recipe for your autumn jam....would you share it? It sounds absolutely fabulous!
